Each and every day, we face choices.
It’s how we make those choices that determines the kind of leader we can be. In Tighten the Lug Nuts The Principles of Balanced Leadership, Rocky Romanella uses his over forty years of experience in supply chain, logistics and transportation, retail, sales and operational management at UPS, and his CEO and Director roles, to explore the ways a true leader can add value as a trusted advisor, mentor, and visionary who uses a process approach to lead the organization and its people to new levels of success.
In an engaging, personal, and witty style, Rocky Romanella details how leaders must make their three major constituents equal priority by actively listening to their needs and building strong relationships. By following the steps Romanella lays out, you can truly learn the importance of Balanced Leadership.
Romanella believes the true measure of a great leader is someone who leaves things a little better than they found them. In Tighten the Lug Nuts, you’ll follow Joe Scafone as he demonstrates the importance of small acts of kindness, the power that comes with understanding your role, and the freedom that accepting responsibility affords. Learn how to tighten the lug nuts in your own life to keep from becoming overwhelmed and to take the steps to becoming a truly balanced and valuable leader.

Romanella reflects on a long career using an interesting foil: an alter-ego taking his last cross-country commute. What is unique is that he sees every detail, no matter how benign, as significant in the effort, and potential success, at being an accomplished business leader. He does not brag about his specific successes; however, he implies that with his lessons, a leader can find personal and professional fulfillment. Each chapter/lesson can stand on its own, though they weave nicely into an easy-to-relate-to anthology. Volumes have been written by business, military, and political leaders on how to be successful. Romanella’s approach is a personal one, and at the end of each chapter he summarizes the lessons, like the legend on a map. The author’s leadership map is not rigid, linear, or formulaic: it is colorful, shows contours of sharp inclines or valleys, vividly describes hazards, and points to the simple direct paths a leader can choose from, emphasizing a central tenet of personal character and integrity.
The title comes from one of many colorful lessons… take care of small and easy to correct problems right away, or they may become costly disasters.
The author’s strength is his ability to impart a lesson of life and leadership with a self-deprecating wit that is hard not to admire. He is never the hero of his many anecdotes. He often makes himself the punchline, and Romanella can certainly entertain.
I know the author, having worked for, with, and around him for almost a generation. He neglects to mention his many successes as an upper management business leader with UPS, and they were numerous and unlikely to ever be repeated. This is perhaps deliberate, as Rocky always emphasized the people in the trenches were the ones fighting the good fight, not him. His humility has always been refreshing and an unwritten lesson to all.
Romanella’s most important path for the business leader is never stated in the book directly, but a close reading will solidify the impression that his favorite role is being a father. If every subordinate leader had a boss like Rocky, who cared for the well-being of each person in his charge as if one of his family, that employee would never have to worry if his or her back was protected – he could charge into the day to succeed or fail greatly on his own. No matter the outcome, Rocky would be standing at your side.

Tighten the Lug Nuts The Principles of Balanced Leadership Rocky Romanella 9780998386300 Books Reviews
Rocky explains, in this very easy to read book, the complex subject of leadership. But even more rewarding is how he shares his years of experience and knowledge both personally and professionally with us as he explains his principles of balanced leadership. Tighten the Lug Nuts explains why values are the foundation for every goal we hope to achieve. A must read for anyone especially those in roles of responsibility or striving to be the best they can.
Great book! Very practical and perfect for today’s business environment. Would definitely recommend.
This book arrived last night and I just finished it a day later. It was an inspiring read with many powerful messages, particularly for me the cathedral story, and the concept 'without purpose we drift, with purpose we steer'. The story is filled with funny, easily digestible parables chock full of clear, concise lessons on how to lead in all aspects of your life. After reading it, I can certainly say it left me way better then it found me. Now time to go tighten some of my own lug nuts. 😉
An extremely entertaining (and quick) read rooted in real world experience, relatable circumstances and countless lessons on Balanced Leadership. Rocky uses his story telling ability to showcase how some of 'Joe Scafone's' most important life lessons (regarding leadership) came from not only the most important and closest people to him but also from some chance encounters with unexpected individuals.
I'm guaranteed to find myself referring back to his anecdotes and applying his principles for year's to come as I continue to work towards becoming a stronger leader and creating my own legacy.
Just finished this book today. Excellent and easy read. The way Rocky tells stories is amazing and the tips and overall theme of the book can be applied to any business and all levels of employees. It's very simple and straightforward information. Lots of books out there that focus on leadership and similar topics are long winded and drawn out where this is straight to the point and easy to take action on within your own professional career. Hope Rocky puts out some more books!
After a rich career that is still going, Rocky shares valuable insights on how to be a leader in a holistic way - by marrying his life philosophies with his business acumen, and telling it in an airplane trip setting that grabs and holds attention by being simple and profound at the same time. This is a great read for anyone who at any time is in a leadership position - which as Rocky points out, is all of us at some point in our lives. So, it is a great read for all, but especially for business leaders who want to hone their approach and be proactive about their legacy. Well done Mr. Romanella, thank you for taking the time and care to share this wisdom.
I thoroughly enjoyed This book and I highly recommend for all levels of management and leadership to read. It's a culmination of an impressive career told through the eyes of "Joe" full of humor, parallels of Italian-American heritage and stresses the importance and criticality of moralality, character and honesty as key components to be a successful leader. It's a culmination of an impressive career and something I will refer back to often, it's a well articulated manifesto on how to live our lives in a demanding environment!
