A decade ago, Ajax took the Web out of childhood, and now HTML5 and JavaScript are moving the Web into full adulthood. This insightful overview provides striking examples of how these technologies have teamed up to give the Web a truly open platform.
Author Kyle Simpson (HTML5 Cookbook) shows you how JavaScript unlocks the power of all of the new functionality in HTML5, giving web applications the capabilities developers have wanted for years. These technologies now provide the raw tools you need in the presentation layer to replace everything you used to do with Flash.
You’ll discover how
- HTML5 builds natively into the web platform things we find most commonly useful, such as audio, video, and drawing
- The Canvas element is changing graphic animations, games, audio visualization, charting, and video effects
- Geolocation has spawned “geofencing” and augmented reality
- Web Workers allows calculations to be performed in the background, rather than compete with the UI
- Web Sockets is enabling realtime communication for chat, live tech support, multi-user collaboration, and gaming
- Mobile device APIs will give web apps direct access the phone’s camera, vibration, and other capabilities
JavaScript and HTML5 Now eBook Kyle Simpson
The word "Now" in the title I think made it seem like it should be a programmer's guide, but it is not...it is a technology survey at a 10,000ft level. This book does not contain any coding instructions nor examples to get you going, nor to even give you the flavor of HTML5 and JavaScript. It is definitely more of a glossy "technology review" of JS and HTML5 which describes where these languages and tools fit into the very broad technological landscape that is forming as part of today's web. Just thought I'd write this review to inform somebody in case they are expecting this book to present coding rules, examples, best practices, design patterns, and other topics associated with actual programming. It does not...it is just a kind of white paper or executive summary on JS and HTML5.Product details

JavaScript and HTML5 Now eBook Kyle Simpson Reviews
I liked this read! I liked the fact that the information within the book told the "Untold" stories about a programming language that takes a powerful step in web development.
There are a lot of people out there that take on the label "Web Developer", but few of them actually know this powerful code and how to use it to it's maximum capabilities when combined with HTML5
The book rates a 4 with me because it points to the fact that though JavaScript might not be the "Talk of the Web", it certainly runs its race well when used properly. It had me eager to read more, but left me just a bit sooner than I hoped...
Great Book though, Every Developer should learn JavaScript. It's worth the time and time is money in the industry!
Go away thingy begging me for seventeen more words . Damn again. How many more words to go. Just one
This information was not presented well and can easily be found in any online article that talks about new features of HTML 5. The examples were not presented in an easy to reference manner and I feel like this barely skims the surface of what html5 has to offer. It seems like this book was written from a glossary and put into paragraphs, which makes it harder to read and the info inaccessible.
There isn't anything technical in this read, but if you we're wondering how the two technologies interact with each other and want to get an overview and examples of capabilities, this is a good read. It took me about 15min to read through, but definitely underscored the importance of the two in the use of the web today and how it will be used 'tomorrow'.
For a free book and a good overview, I recommend it.
While it does give some details on both JavaScript and HTML, this book does not go into great detail about either subject. I have just started taking a Web Authoring class and was hoping for a book with pointers and hints. This was a short read that seemed like a push for using JavaScript and an open programming system. Still a pretty good read though.
Nothing on code or anything that personal, but a great tool for finding out what is coming. I am new to developing and only have one page completed, I haven't explored a lot into more than basic HTML and CSS. Now I know more about what to expect as my Major (Web Development Major) nears in terms of what is new, what is expected, and what to look for. At some point I intend to read again to try to memorize more of the information in the book as it gives a good overview of what to come and strong comparisons to what is used now.
The only thing I found bad about this book was that it wasn't longer, I felt it left a bit on the table where it could have expanded on the great information provided. I was sad it ended as soon as it did but the information was worth the money spent.
I did enjoy reading this e-book. I had expected it to be a book about JavaScript with examples of code and how to use that code. I bought it on my kindle and didn't take the time to read any reviews. I am not disappointed for having read this book. I learned a bit of history of web language, and some html tags to read more about online.
The author made this book flow for me in a way that I quickly finished. I felt like it was told by someone who has a passion for the subject.
The word "Now" in the title I think made it seem like it should be a programmer's guide, but it is not...it is a technology survey at a 10,000ft level.
